Dundee Hurricanes Announce New Sponsor - Body Tone Warehouse - Thursday, August 19, 2010

Body Tone Warehouse

Dundee Hurricanes are proud to announce a link up with the Body Tone Warehouse as their Official Nutrient Supplier. Body Tone Warehouse, run by Harry Ogg, specialise in the sale of Sports, Bodybuilding and Fitness Supplements, exclusive gym wear and accessories, and are located on Main Street in Dundee. Harry has a huge experience and knowledge of strength and fitness training, and is aiming to help pass that knowledge on to the team's players.

"I was approached by Ritchie Bannon (DT) about getting involved with the Dundee Hurricanes. After a chat with their General Manager Charlie Campbell, I knew this was something I was keen on helping with." After a season decimated by injury, strength and fitness is something the Hurricanes are keen to develop. "We've been hit hard this year, with a number of serious injuries," said Charlie. "If we can get the players more aware of their personal development, in terms of strength and fitness, this will help us to prevent some of these injuries. I am delighted that Harry has extended his offer of help, and I see his extensive knowledge being invaluable."

Harry talked of his plans with the Hurricanes. "I am going to help the players improve their knowledge of the importance of nutrition and I will also help anyone trying to put together their own strength and conditioning programme. I will be attending their training sessions to advise on this sort of thing and will be available at the shop for them to come in and discuss anything to help them." When asked about his American Football knowledge, Harry replied "It's something I'm keen to learn more about. I have been bodybuilding for many years, and enjoy most sports. I see the Hurricanes as my new team now and will do all I can to help them."

Hurricanes look for lightning striking twice

Hurricanes @ Pirates

The Dundee Hurricanes travel to the west coast of Scotland to take on runaway leaders of D1 North, East Kilbride Pirates. Earlier this year, the a depleted Hurricanes side held the Pirates scoreless until shortly before the 4th Quarter. However, in the corresponding fixture last season, with both sides in very similar positions, the Hurricanes pulled off one of their finest results of the season being held 6-6 by the Pirates. With the Hurricanes status in Division 1 on the line in the final weeks of the season, the team are all too aware that picking up a shock result would go someway to playing D1 football next season.

Follow the action on the Dundee Hurricanes twitter page from 2.30pm this Sunday.

Senators see of Hurricanes - Wednesday, June 30, 2010
The Hurricanes took their 2nd trip to England this past weekend to take on the Gateshead Senators. Buoyed by their performance the week before, there was a real air of optimism in the Dundee camp. That optimism didn't last long into the game, as an efficient Gateshead offence picked apart the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes' sole score came from a familiar source, the hard running of GB International Mahamadou Niakaté. Later in the game, Niakaté appeared to have added to his tally for the season, only to see it called back for a block in the back. The Senators ran out 42-6 winners, however, there were a number of positive taken from the game by GM Charlie Campbell. "A number of rookies got game time today, with many of them take the chance to shine. I hope they take this experience and learn from it ahead of the rest of the season".

The Hurricanes are back to training at Dawson Park this Sunday, and then take the trip to Yorkshire to face the Rams on the 11th July.

The brainchild of Linebacker Dave Robertson, the store will be used for all players and families to have a summer clearout. All proceeds will be going to the club. Anyone wishing to donate goods to the cause, please contact Dave via the forum.

Looking ahead to Gateshead - Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Dundee Hurricanes @ Gateshead Senators

After a fantastic win away to the Nighthawks last weekend, the Dundee Hurricanes are quickly back into action this week with a trip to the North East of England to play old foes, the Gateshead Senators. The two met in the Hurricanes' season opener, with the Senators taking a hard fought victory 28-20.

The Hurricanes showed the heart and determination which they are known for last week, and Head Coach Ross MacPherson knows more of the same wil be required against the former Premier Division opponents. "We know what we have to do this weekend. The lads played their hearts out at the Nighthawks last weekend, and they played with a smile on their faces and I think that showed in their play." When asked if he thought the efforts of last weekend would have drained his players, Coach MacPherson replied "The bus was buzzing on the way home. I know from having spoken with a number of the team since Sunday that despite the usual aches, they were ready to go again on Monday! If the players can summon up the performance that they did last weekend, I'm sure we will take it to the Senators."

The action this Sunday will take place at the Gateshead International Stadium, and we will have live updates from the game here on the site via our Twitter feed.

Hurricanes line up

The Hurricanes official photographer, Rachel, really helped capture the emotion of the game last Sunday in Merseyside. You can view the pictures from the day by clicking here.

Canes storm to victory (Part 1) - Sunday, June 20, 2010
The Dundee Hurricanes made the long journey to Formby, just outside of Liverpool, today to take on the Merseyside Nighthawks in a rematch of their meeting at Dawson Park just 2 weeks ago. Through injuries and work commitments, the Hurricanes took only 22 players, including a number of rookies.

For the 5th straight game the Hurricanes won the coin toss and elected to receive. The offence were moving the ball well, with Head Coach Ross MacPherson playing Centre and Bruce Thomson returning back to the fold at Quarterback. Mahamadou Niakaté and Lars Halford were in the backfield, and the two worked exceptionally well with each other. With so few numbers travelling, many players were playing "Ironman Football", playing both Offence and Defence, including Niakaté and Halford.

With the teams swapping possesion throughout the 1st Quarter, it was the Merseyside Nighthawks who opened the scoring, with a deep pass connecting in the endzone. A flag on a failed PAT, gave the Nighthawks a second chance, which they duly converted to go 7-0 up. However, this seemed to inspire the Hurricanes into action. Quarterback Bruce Thomson was connecting well with his receivers, with big gains from brother Fraser Thomson, Kris Gibson, Mike Evans and Niakaté. It was the latter who added the first Canes TD of the day, with a sweeping run to put them back to within a point of the hosts. This was to be how the first half finished, 7-6.

Canes storm to victory (Part 2) - Sunday, June 20, 2010
The Hurricanes opened up the 3rd quarter in explosive fashion, with Bruce Thomson adding to his passing yards and Niakaté and Halford continuing to make headway on the ground. Before the 3rd quarter was out, the power combo of the running backs paid off once again, with Niakaté forcing over his 2nd TD of the day, despite the best efforts of the Nighthawks defence.

Early in the 4th Quarter, arguably came the play of the day. Bruce Thomson showed great composure and a fantastic arm to find a wide open Niakaté in the end zone for a killer 3rd touchdown of the day. This gave the Hurricanes an 18-7 lead, which thanks to some staunch defence from the Hurricanes, ended up being the final score. The game ended to emotional scenes from the Hurricanes, who have fought hard with no reward this season. But, with their backs against the wall, they produced a fantastic performance which will live long in the memory.

Hurricanes hit on tough times - Thursday, June 10, 2010
It's been a tough couple of weeks for the Dundee Hurricanes. 2 weeks ago, the Canes went to war with the East Kilbride Pirates and for 3 quarters, they held their own. However, having suffered the loss of key player in QB Bruce Thomson to injury, the Hurricanes were forced to turn to Defensive Back David Orr to try to lead the team. Despite Orr's best efforts, the offense stuttered and were unable to break down the Pirates. The Pirates scored late in the 3rd quarter and ran out comfortable winners in the end, 33-0.

Last weekend, the Merseyside Nighthawks came to Dawson Park in a battle that could have a huge bearing on the season. With Bruce Thomson still missing from the side, it was up to Mahamadou Niakaté to take the reigns at QB, with Kris Gibson and Gavin Anderson in the backfield. The Hurricanes were also boosted by the return of WR Darren Henderson. In a tough battle, the Canes eventually lost 13-2, finding it difficult to get things moving on the offensive side of things.

The Hurricanes are next in action on the 20th June, with the return fixture against the Nighthawks. With the return of Bruce Thomson to look forward to, they know they must get a result.

Hurricanes battle on 2 fronts this weekend - Thursday, May 27, 2010
This weekend sees the Dundee Hurricanes host the East Kilbride Pirates at Dawson Park. Both sides, however, will be missing key players. Fans favourites Mahamadou 'Dooma' Niakaté and Fraser 'Scrappy' Thomson are both on International duty this Saturday with the Great Britain Lions, who are hosting Centre College from the US at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. The Pirates also have a number of players, including former 'Cane Jamie Charles, in the Lions side.

The Centre College Colonels are no stranger to these shores. They last played the GB Lions in 2005, running out 27-14 winners on that occasion. Niakaté and Thomson will no doubt be keen to help the Lions to a victory ahead of this summer's European Championships.

Due to the timing of the match though, the Canes and Pirates will line up on Sunday without their internationalists. The Hurricanes are keen to bounce back from the defeat they suffered 3 weeks ago to the Yorkshire Rams, and Sunday will represent an opportunity for players to step up and make a difference. "While we are missing 'Scrappy' and 'Dooma' this weekend, the core of our squad is still there." stated Head Coach Ross MacPherson. "We have practised hard the past two weeks and have worked on a game plan without these two key players. I am very confident in the squad stepping up to the challenge this week and perhaps a new hero will emerge."

The action kicks off at Dawson Park at 2.30pm.

Looking back at East Kilbride Pirates 2009 - Wednesday, May 19, 2010
On May 30th, the East Kilbride Pirates visit Dawson Park to take on the Dundee Hurricanes. The only 2 Scottish teams in Division I met twice last year in the then-BAFL Division I. Prior to the season, a restructuring of the Premier Division by the BAFL hieracrchy saw the Pirates forced to make the tough decision to step down to Division I due to the huge costs involved with travel through the restructure. Having comfortably disposed for the West Coast Trojans 62-12, the Pirates travelled to Dawson Park expected to easily take care of the Hurricanes. Although the 30-12 scoreline may suggest otherwise, this was far from a stroll for the former Premier Division side. Having been held to a scoreless 1st quarter, the game changed in a 3 minute spell. The game was extremely tight for long spells, with the Hurricanes more than holding their own.

The 2nd encounter at Hamilton RC, no one outside the Hurricanes camp expected anything other than a big win for the home side. However, the Canes proved they were more than a match for the 8-0 Pirates. The Hurricanes defence showed why they were one of the premier defences in the British game and forced a turnover deep in Pirates territory and this led to a trademark Niakate TD on the ground. Truth be told, the Hurricanes were extremely unlucky to end up with a tie 6-6 and could have added to the scoreline. It was the performance of the season from the Hurricanes Defence, something that the 2010 Hurricanes must look to replicate at the end of the month.

Yorkshire Rams 57 Dundee Hurricanes 6 (Part 1) - Wednesday, May 12, 2010
The Canes faced up to the Yorkshire Rams on Sunday, hoping to wipe out the memory of last weeks narrow defeat to the Gateshead Senators. Pre-match allowed room for optimism as the Canes had enjoyed considerable success over the Yorkshire men in recent years. However, this wasn't to be carried in to the game and when the home side lost two star men to game ending injuries on the opening kick off this set the tone for the day. Cornerback Mark Craig went out with what turned out to be a fractured jaw, while Lineman Kerim Berktin suffered a dislocated shoulder. Before the canes had a chance to regroup the visitors had opened a 10 point lead, which included a 43 yard FG, and with the home side in disarray they increased it to 17-0 at the end of the quarter. This was a score the Canes had never before faced in their history.

Despite further injuries, the home side were fighting for there lives, desperately trying to find a way back into this game. Early in the 2nd quarter the running combination of Mahamadou Niakate and Todd De Wees began gaining Dundee some yardage. Niakate burst in a short TD from 4 yds to give the Hurricanes some hope in the game. Unfortunately, this seemed to fire the visitors into action and they were now running at Dundee with flair and ease, especially Rams RB Justin Lester who became Yorkshire's all-time leading rusher. So it was no surprise the Rams added further scores to command a 6-38 lead at the half.

The Canes left the field to face some strong words and corrective moves from Head Coach Ross McPherson at the break. They came out looking a different side, with more intensity about there play, but the Rams soon scored again and now had total control of the game. The Hurricanes could not seem to handle the running game from Lester & company, and the Rams ran out 6-57 victors.

Yorkshire Rams 57 Dundee Hurricanes 6 (Part 2) - Wednesday, May 12, 2010
The Canes seemed to have accumulated a large injury list, with Cornerback Mick McManus also paying a visit to the ambulance after the game. With a long trip south for the return game with the Rams this coming Sunday, the Dundee Hurricanes will have to heal quickly and regroup to regain lost ground in Division I.

Canes tackle the Rams - Friday, May 07, 2010

Yorkshire Rams @ Dundee Hurricanes

A few days after the season opener, Head Coach Ross MacPherson spoke positively of his side's efforts against Gateshead. "I felt that the team performed well against Gateshead. They were commited in all areas of play. If we had the break of the ball, we could have won the game. I am in no doubt of that. I was proud of each and everyone of my players today."

Sunday's opponents are the Yorkshire Rams. Last year, the sides only met once, due to the odd number of teams in the league, but it was a game that had a huge bearing on both sides season's. The Rams came to Dundee looking to secure a place in the Division I playoffs, but were met by a Hurricanes team who were fighting for their life in Division I. A rain soaked day in August saw the Hurricanes end the Rams hopes with a 14-6 victory, one that secured the Canes position in Division I. Its a stat that will not go amiss on the visitors this Sunday.

"Last season, we played exceptionally against the Rams", General Manager Charlie Campbell said. "And while we still have the main spine of the squad from last year, we have had some excellent additions to the squad. I expect us to give the Rams an extremely tough game." This was a sentiment echoed by Coach MacPherson. "The lads know what it takes in this league now, and how tight every game will be. I have no doubts that we still have it all to play for"

The action will commence at 2.30pm on Sunday at Dawson Park.

Gateshead Senators 28 Dundee Hurricanes 20 - Sunday, May 02, 2010
The Hurricanes opened their 2010 campaign today with the visit of the formidable Gateshead Senators. The Canes knew they had a task on their hands as they had never previously defeated the Senators, but they were first to shine. GB Lion, Mahamadou Niakate burst up-field for a monster gain. This was followed by new signing, Todd De Wees, scoring his first competitive TD from 3yds. Niakate's fellow Internationalist, Fraser Thomson then ran in a two point conversion to give the canes a early 8-0 lead.

With the teams now trading drives, the Senators got themselves back into the game with a short, sharp passing TD and a converted extra point attempt to pull back to 8-7 down at the end of the 1st period.

The 2nd QT was a high scoring affair with Canes QB Bruce Thomson scrambling in from 2 yds to increase the lead to 14-7. After a failed PAT, the experienced Senators set about a quick fire response, who scored from a deep pass then added a 2 point conversion to take the lead for the first time in the game. Before the Canes had a chance to regroup, the visitors added a further score and a 1 point conversion to now hold a formidable 14-22 advantage. The home side tried hard to get back into the game and thought they had reduced the deficit only for Niakate's long TD to be disallowed for a off ball incident.

The second half saw the Canes come out strong and Niakate soon got the TD he deserved, breaking through from 36 yards out to reduce the score to 20-22. The subsequent 2 point attempt was held up at the goal line by a staunch Senators D. Once again, the Senators again came back and broke the Canes rearguard to increase their advantage back to 20-28. The game was to end without further score, despite the Canes' best effort and domination of possession.

Gateshead Senators 28 Dundee Hurricanes 20 - Part 2
Head Coach Ross McPherson said "I am obviously disappointed to lose, however there were a number of positives to take from the game. This is a young team, with a lot of talent and focus. If we play as hard as we did today, we will get the rewards we deserve as the season progresses."

The Season Is Here! - Monday, April 26, 2010

Gateshead Senators @ Dundee Hurricanes

It's been a long time since August 30th, 2009. That was the last time the Dundee Hurricanes played competitive action in Division I North, under the then BAFL banner. This Sunday, whilst the banner may have changed to BAFA, the team coming to Dawson Park are familiar foes, the Gateshead Senators. In 2009, only 3 points separated the two sides, with the Senators coming out on top both times. The Hurricanes aim to turn things around in the season opener to get off to a flying start.

The pre-season has been a hard hitting affair, with a number of rookies puting themselves in contention for a starting berth this Sunday. However, the experienced core of the team are still ever-present and the coaching team are expecting big things from the mix of experience and youth. See what happens this Sunday, 2nd May at Dawson Park, Dundee. Action kicks off at 2.30pm, with team merchandise available on the day!

Hurricanes edge scrimmage with Tigers - Wednesday, April 21, 2010
The Hurricanes began to wind up there pre season preparations on Sunday with a trip to old adversaries, the Glasgow Tigers, in a controlled scrimmage. The match up was always going to be tough against last year's Div II Semi Finalists.

Canes Take On Tigers

The Canes gave a debut to American running back Todd De Wees and he repaid the coaches confidence in him when he opened the scoring with a powerful run from around 10yds. The youthful tigers fought back and tied the match late in the first period. Crowd favourite Mahamadou Niakate was now teaming up well with De Wees and he found the end zone from 12 yds out to give the Canes a commanding 12-6 lead at the half.

Canes Take On Tigers

HC Ross MacPherson took the chance now to give all of his new recruits valuable game experience in preparation for the fast approaching season opener against Gateshead Senators in two weeks time. Several rookies played there way into MacPherson's plans and assisted in increasing the lead to 18-6 with Niakate again bursting his way through for his 2nd score of the day.

The fourth and final period saw mass changes in the Canes ranks, with Adam "Flair" Ingram going under centre for the first time in competition, and giving a good accounting of himself. On the final play of the game a break in concentration allowed the Tigers to regain some pride with there second score of the day.

Hurricanes GM Thanks Glasgow Tigers - Sunday, April 18, 2010
Charlie Campbell put out a big "Thank you!" to the Glasgow Tigers in respect of today’s controlled scrimmage. Charlie extolled “I would particularly like to thank Tigers GM William Clark and Coach Alan Wilson for enabling the scrimmage. Both sides used their starters for the first couple of series before experimenting with a number of rookies. It really meant a lot of new guys got a lot of game time which we think will be valuable.” Charlie added “Not surprisingly the Tigers played the game cleanly and fairly, something I expected of a team run by William & Alan.” Charlie concluded “I wish the Tigers all the best in their endeavours in 2010 and expect them to do well.”

Flair Player - Friday, April 09, 2010
American Football is known as a razzle-dazzle, high-octane, action packed game. Naturally the hard hitting sport has its flair players and the Dundee Hurricanes can certainly boast a number of game changing athletes who can be classed as flair players.

Not surprisingly, as by now nothing should ever surprise anybody when it comes to American Football in Dundee, the ‘Canes have one particularly unusual flair player. He comes in the form of standout wide receiver Adam Ingram. The big split-end not only snags passes he also flairs in the most literal of senses. For the uninitiated this will probably mean very little but to those in the know, flairing is the art of making cocktails in a theatrical and entertaining manner with bottles and cocktails shakers flying and spinning through the air. Add into the equation some juggling, flipping and a few magic tricks and you can easily imagine the whole experience can be quite thrilling – It’s very much Tom Cruise without a stunt man.

Please be aware that bar flairing should not be tried at home as it can be very dangerous. Notwithstanding the obvious hazards bar flairing as a sport is quite dazzling and very exciting spectacle and few perform the art better than our own Adam Ingram. Interestingly and due to the associated intricacies of bar flairing, the sport has now been repackaged as extreme bar tending.

Essentially bar flairing has become a very much sought after talent among many bar and night club owners and companies marketing alcoholic products. Competitions have been sponsored by drinks companies to attract flair bartenders and in some cases hospitality training companies hold courses to teach flair techniques – extreme bar tending is certainly on a significant upswing!

Flair Player (Part 2) - Friday, April 09, 2010

Adam Ingram in action

Notably Adam has picked up a few national trophies over recent times as a result of his bar flairing skills and has just qualified for the TayFM’s sponsored Tay’s Got Talent - as with the sport of flairing it’s onwards and upwards for Adam.

Hurricanes GM Charlie Campbell noted “I have seen Adam do his stuff and he is quite impressive……he has done very well for himself!”

Hurricanes head coach Ross MacPherson speaking from his home in the suburb of Broughty Ferry confirmed Charlie’s view “Adam has a lot of ability, and great hand-eye coordination. I would ask the rest of our players not to try this at home…..especially our offensive lineman!”

Dundee Hurricanes 15 Edinburgh Wolves 0 - Tuesday, April 06, 2010
After a disappointing 2009 campaign the "canes" took to the field to face their old adversaries with a much changed lineup.
They started strongly and despite not scoring in the 1st quarter they controlled the majority of the period.
The 2nd period came to life with Bruce Thomson and Darren Henderson connecting on a 71 yard touchdown made even sweeter by the fact Henderson beat former cane Calum Buchan for the score.
Fan favourite Mahamadou Niakate topped up the score with a huge 44 yard field goal and a 9-0 half time lead.
Canes HC Ross McPherson took the opportunity at the break to introduce several off his new signings and they showed the future of the club is in good hands by completely dominating this period with the driving rain now becoming there fiercest foe. The only score of the period saw Niakate scramble in from 5 yds to increase the lead to 15-0.
The fourth and final period became a total washout and its was no surprise that neither team could score in these conditions.
Significant plus for the canes was not only the win but the fact they managed to introduce no fewer than 14 new signings to the club and rack up over 300 yards offence with there new look defence holding the visitors to just under 100.
They have further opportunity to fine tune when they wrap up their pre-season campaign with a visit west to face the Glasgow Tigers on April 18th.

Wolves 0 Hurricanes 15 - Sunday, April 04, 2010

Wolves 0 @ Hurricanes 15

Easter Sunday brought the Edinburgh Wolves to Dawson Park for a pre-season game with the Dundee Hurricanes. The Division II side fought hard, and it took a special effort for the Hurricanes to open the score. 'Canes QB, Bruce Thomson found wide-out Darren Henderson, who took a 79 yard pass to the house, with former Hurricane Calum Buchan trailing in his wake. The Hurricanes failed to add the extra points, but did add a 40 yard field goal from Dooma. The scoring was rounded off with Dooma punching in a TD from the backfield to confirm the Dundee victory.

The Dundee Hurricanes now have 2 weeks before a planned Scrimmage with the Glasgow Tigers, before opening their league campaign on May 2nd at home to Gateshead Senators.

Hurricanes GM Charlie Campbell sent out a message last night - The Hurricanes need YOU! Charlie stated "We are currently on the look out for volunteers to help out on the side line this season, with ball duties and other areas. We would prefer to have permanent people in these roles so that we do not have to worry about this."

There are few restrictions in place for these roles, the only one that the GM brought up is that ideally the volunteers would be at least 14 years of age. If you are keen or interested, please get in touch by coming up to Dawson Park this Sunday, or by contacting Charlie Campbell on 07919-901464.

On this occasion, it was the Dundee Channel who delivered a feature on the team. The broadcast focused on the ‘Canes first preseason training session at Dawson Park and included interviews with Ross MacPherson, Fraser “Scrappy” Thomson and Mahamadou “Dooma” Niakate.

Super Bowl Party (The Big House)
9 February 2010 – Dundee, Scotland Report by Dieter Brock

The Dundee Hurricanes, in partnership with the University of Dundee, put on a Super Bowl party that will be remembered for another 25 years. This year’s edition which celebrated a quarter of a century of the sport in the city of discovery attracted well in excess 400 people* making it the largest Super Bowl get together north of the border.

The event, which was held at the sizeable Air Bar located within the University of Dundee’s Student Union, required an overspill bar to be opened in order to accommodate the huge crowd.

The high spirited fans enjoyed the New Orleans Saints come from behind to down the favoured Indianapolis Colts. Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees picked up Super Bowl XLIV’s most valuable player award as he outshone blue chip quarterback Peyton Manning in his team’s 31-17 victory.

A slightly surprised Mahamadou “Dooma” Niakate noted “We expected around 200 or so fans……to get more than twice that number was fantastic.” The British International running back continued “I understand Abertay University also had a well attended Super Bowl party, so it was a good night for the sport in Dundee.”

Club GM Charlie Campbell expressed his gratitude to the University of Dundee and all those who supported the event “It worked out very well. The university did a great job in hosting the party and the media was a great help in publicising the event.”

Super Bowl Party (Silver Jubilee Edition) - Thursday, February 04, 2010
Report by Dieter Brock

The Dundee Hurricanes are pleased to announce that their annual Super Bowl Party will be presented in partnership with the University of Dundee. The party will take place on 7 February 2010 at the Air Bar located within the University’s Student Union. The event will celebrate 25 years of American Football in Dundee.

Dundee Hurricanes general manager Charlie Campbell explained “American Football kicked off in Dundee back in 1985 when a few hardy souls got together to form a team. The club named itself the Dundee Whalers, after the whaling industry which was once a major business sector in the city. The Whalers played their first fully kitted game a few years later and went onto enjoy a lot of success.” Fast forwarding to the present Charlie added “Today we have the Dundee Hurricanes, who were formed a couple of years after the demise of the Whalers. The ‘Canes evolved out of the Dundee Storm youth American Football team and have enjoyed a significant amount of success since entering the British Senior League back in 2003. This year’s party is essentially a celebration of 25 years of gridiron in the City of Discovery.”

The evening’s events kick-off at 7.30pm, with a sports quiz to be held at 9pm. Thereafter it will be Super Bowl XLIV when the New Orleans Saints square off against the Indianapolis Colts in what promises to be an offensive thriller when gunslingers Drew Brees and Peyton Manning go head to head.

Charlie noted “To help celebrate 25 years of American Football in the city admission to the event will be free. Essentially we are hoping to repay all those who have supported the sport in Dundee over all these years.” We expect to have potentially the largest Super Bowl party in Scotland and possibly one of the biggest in the UK.”

‘Canes Crank it Up…….. - Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Report by Ivor Wynne

Dundee Hurricanes second non-contact preseason event was again held indoors at Monifieth High School. The main games hall was packed out with returning veterans and sprinkling of new guys. The squad were put through a set of football orientated drills and aerobic exercises. The players generally enjoyed the get together despite the session being at a slightly higher tempo than the previous practice.

GM Charlie Campbell was pleased with the team’s progress “today’s drills were slightly more arduous than last weeks opening session. It seems that player’s fitness is progressing at the rate we were hoping for.” Charlie concluded “The opening few weeks of preseason training can sometimes be the most demanding but aerobic and technique stuff is as necessary as mastering the play book. We are getting great numbers each week and I think we will be ready when we hit the field in the next couple of weeks”

A smiling coach Ross MacPherson grinned “I think the players loved it - the coaches running the practice ensured it would be fun and that’s what happened.” Ross joked “Some of the more vocal players were a little quieter today during their recovery period……it was good to see they were using their recovery period the way it should be used” Coach MacPherson concluded “Nobody quit, that was a great reflection on the players.”

Dundee Hurricanes 3rd and final indoor training session will take place next Sunday (31 January 2010). It will again be held indoors and take place at Monifieth High School* between 12pm and 2pm at a cost of £3 per player.

Starting on the Sunday, 7 February 2010 the Hurricanes will open their first full outdoor practice at Dawson Park. The full details of this and all forthcoming outdoor sessions will be announced over the next seven days

Sea, Sand and Shuttles - Saturday, January 23, 2010
Report by Ivor Wynne

The Dundee Hurricanes opened their 2010 preseason training in the ‘suburbs last Sunday. The team made its way down the coast to sunny and sandy Monifieth for its first practice. The non-contact event was held indoors at Monifieth High School where the players were put through a series of football drills which tested both their technique and aerobic performance.

GM Charlie Campbell was delighted with the day’s outcome “the session was very well constructed. Essentially the coaches shied away from running for running sake and focused on fit for-for-purpose drills.” Charlie continued “I was delighted with the player’s application they knuckled down and got on with it.” Charlie concluded “Most of the players came back in pretty good shape and they should be commended for that. What was also pleasing was the fact they seemed to get into sync really quickly.”

Cornerback John Annand agreed with Charlie’s sentiments “It was fun, the drills were all fit-for-purpose and I think all the players enjoyed the session.”

Fellow defensive back Mike Evans conferred “It was really good, the first session back is always the hardest. The coaches made the session enjoyable, although we did have to work hard at times. I thought the spirit was great amongst the players, and that certainly makes the session easier.”

Dundee Hurricanes next training session will take place next Sunday (24th January 2010). It will again be held indoors and take place at Monifieth High School* between 12pm and 2pm at a cost of £3 per player.

Santabowl 2009 is a draw!!! - Monday, December 21, 2009
The fifth annual Santabowl saw coach Scrappy's team trying to get the award back from the hands of coach Craig's group. Coach Craig being delayed due to terrible snow condition the task to retain the title was entrusted to ex Scotland Youth star coach Lars Halford.
In the battle of of current GB player (Scrappy) versus former Scotland player (Lars) nobody managed to edge out their opponent and for the first time ever since its creation the final score of the Santabowl was a well-fought draw 49-49.

Dundee Hurricanes 64 West Coast Trojans 6 (1/2) - Monday, August 31, 2009
The Hurricanes returned to Dawson today hoping to carry their recent good form into a relegation decider with long time rivals West coast Trojans.
At the start of the season no one would have predicted these sides would be in such a position so, a gridiron classic was needed by Dundee if they were to avoid the drop.
West Coast looked the stronger side from the off, but a 37 yd punt return from Fraser Thomson gave the home side great field position early in the period, Mahamadou Niakate capitalised and ran in from short yardage to open the scoring with Thomson adding a 2 point conversion. It would be the only scoring in the period so Dundee held a narrow lead going into the 2nd quarter.
The 2nd quarter saw Dundee totally dominate first with Niakate getting his 2nd td of the day, this time from 14 yards. Darren Henderson was next running in from 28yds to open a 20-0 lead, Niakate added the 2 point conversion.
Niakate now was finding space all over the field and took a 32yd pas from Bruce Thomson to the end zone for 28-0 scoreline, he duly added the 2 pointer himself. Then he added to the scoreline with a 8 yd dash, FB Lars Halford adding the 2 point conversion giving the Cannes a 38-0 half time lead.
Coach McPherson sensing the game was won took the opportunity to rest several starters for the 2nd half yet the Canes controlled the game with several rookies making a case for starting spots for 2010.

Darren Henderson, 3TDs

Dundee Hurricanes 64 West Coast Trojans 6 (2/2)
The 2nd half opened brightly with both sides exchanging drives but Dundee QB Ben Edelshain now under centre fired in a perfect 12 yard pass to Adam Ingram for a 44-0 lead, Fraser Thomson this time adding the 2 point conversion. Edelshain again showing his ability now finding Darren Henderson from 22 yards for his second score of the day and a 52-0 scoreline at the end of the period.
The fourth period saw the play of the day with Fraser Thomson running 96 yards for the longest TD in Hurricanes history.
The Trojans still fought to avoid a white wash and with seconds remaining ran in from short distance to get a score on the board.
The Canes however, were not finished and Darren Henderson capped a superb showing running a kick off back 67 yds for his 3rd score of the day and a final score of 64-6.
Head Coach Ross McPherson was delighted with the performance but, must regret his side didn't show this sort of form more often this season.

Dundee Hurricanes 14 Yorkshire Rams 6 - Tuesday, August 25, 2009
The Rams travelled to Dundee knowing a win would secure a play off spot but with the Canes fighting to avoid relegation they knew they were facing a real challenge.
Dundee seemed to have found good form at the right time and a draw last week with league leaders East Kilbride filled the team with confidence going into this fixture.

The first period of the game was played in a downpour and remained scoreless. The second period was much more adventurous and the home side were first to open the scoring, home QB Bruce Thomson found brother Fraser with a glorious TD pass. Yorkshire however, came back strongly and tied the game just before halftime.

The half time break gave the teams time to regroup and prepare for a second half that could decide the outcome of their seasons.
Canes Hc Ross Mcpherson made no changes and his side came out strong and began to dominate with his offensive line creating space for Mahamadou Niakate to make significant yardage on the ground.
The defense also played their part limiting the Rams opportunities every time they were on the field.
Late in the third quarter the Thomson duo combined again to increase the scoring to 12-6 and Niakate added a two point conversion for the Canes to take a 14-6 lead into the final period.
The Rams knowing their play offs chances were slipping away threw everything into the game but it was to no avail as the home side held on for a historic win.

The Canes have now climbed to third from bottom and face bottom side and long time adverseries West Coast Trojans in a relegation decider at Dawson on Sunday with a 2.30 kick off.
Despite taking a win in the west earlier in the season the Canes will have to be at their best against the trojans who will face relegation for the first time in there history if defeated.

Hurricanes' latest stand! - Friday, August 21, 2009
It is after a couple of closely fought yet disappointing losses that the Hurricanes shocked most by drawing against the top seed of the division. The trip to East Kilbride would prove to be a real test for the Canes as, the windy conditions heavily hampered any attempt to establish a passing game. That forced both teams to heavily rely on the run hence playing right into their opponents' strength.

It is with renewed belief that the Canes go into their last two games of the 2009 season. With their playoff hopes over, after a season full of near misses, they'll be fighting to play again in BAFL1 next season.

The Canes are hosting the Yorkshire Rams at Dawson Park this Sunday from 2.30.

3 Hurricanes in the National squad for Tournament - Friday, July 17, 2009
It's with great delight that Fraser (Scrappy) Thomson and Mahamadou (Dooma) Niakate welcome their teammate Jamie Charles for their next international venture.

The GB Lions American Football squad is hosting a 3-way mini tournament featuring Australia and Sweden. The Lions will play the opener against Australia on Tuesday 21st July and end the tournament against Sweden on Friday 25th July. This will be another opportunity for the GB squad for the 2010 European championship.

Scrappy and Dooma and the rest of the Canes welcomed Jamie onto the squad and believe that he'll be a force to recognise. The 2 veterans are also looking to show their improved skills onto the international stage since their victory against France last November.

Dundee Hurricanes' Headcoach Ross Macpherson extends his support to the whole GB squad for next week's camp and is looking to getting all his players ready for the rest of the BAFL1 season.

Dundee Hurricanes 27 @ 12 West Coast Trojans - Wednesday, June 03, 2009
The Canes finally managed to lift the curse that prevented them from beating their west coast opponents in over 5 previous close encounters. A dominating running display lead by the offensive line (Alaistair McKay, Stevie Cook, Sam Chivars, Ali Millar, Craig Campbell) and Fullback Lars Halford (Offensive MVP) allowed Mahamadou Niakate and Ben Acheson to make good progress for most of the day against the Trojans defense.
The Canes defense also meant business forcing 4 turnovers on the day. The return of several starters helped the Canes keeping a good Trojans running attack under control for the majority of the game. Jamie Charles received the Defensive MVP.
A more complete game report can be found at:
http://hot-iron.co.uk/trojansvdundee009.htm

The Canes now enjoy a short break before receiving the Mustangs and hope to build on this win.

Dundee Hurricanes 20 @ 42 South Yorkshire Mustangs
The travelling Hurricanes came back from their first away game of the season without the win they seeked. The squad was missing several key players on the day which, seemed to accentuate a strong performance from the home team. The Canes did come back with some positives with rookie running back Ben Acheson scoring his first TD after a skillfull show of his talents running with the football (that also won him the Offensive MVP fpr the game). The defense was led by a strong performance by Jamie Charles who got the Defensive MVP award.
Dundee Hurricanes 12 Gateshead Senators 14 - Monday, May 18, 2009
For the second week running the Canes welcomed a former premier league side to Dawson. Last week they faced the East Kilbride Pirates and this week the Gateshead Senators.
The Canes wanted to take some of last weeks good form into this game and seemed to be doing so when they held a 6-2 lead at halftime thanks to the ever reliable Mahamadou Niakate scrambling in for his 3rd td of the season.
However, it had been a very tough half of football and the Canes came out for the 2nd half missing starting qb Bruce Thomson. Back up Ben Edelshain relished his chance however but had nothing to show for his efforts with the home side seeming to be struggling to compete.
The senators were however to run in 2 tds and open a lead of 6-14 at the end of the 3rd qt, Edelshain was to take control in the 4th qt and a trick play involving Niakate passing to Fraser (Scrappy) Thomson followed by an Edelshain pass who found Henderson in some space reduced the deficit to 12-14 but the clock was against the Canes and the Geordies returned home with the hard fought victory, after recovering an onside kick attempt 40seconds from the final whistle.
General opinion had this down as a under par performance from Dundee and the Taysiders will have to return to form and take home a victory from next weeks visit to Doncaster.

East Kilbride Pirates 30-12 Dundee Hurricanes (1 of 2) - Tuesday, May 12, 2009
Teams from Dundee and East Kilbride had not met in a competitive match for over ten years. Back then it was the Dundee Whalers who faced off against the East Kilbride Pirates, but the Hurricanes and Pirates are far from strangers. Having knocked helmets with one another in pre-season games for a number of years, each knew to expect a physical encounter.
Weather played a big part in the proceedings in the early stages as heavy rain forced both teams to keep the ball on the ground. This allowed the opposing defenses to crowd the line in anticipation of the run and there was little to separate the teams in the scoreless opening quarter. The one notable incident was a concerning one for the visitors, when running back Gary Carr left the field with a double fracture of the shoulder caused by a heavy fall in the less than ideal conditions.
As the bad weather cleared and sun began to shine on Dawson Park, the two teams were able to start passing the ball and it was then that the deadlock was broken. Picking off an errant floated pass from the Hurricanes quarterback Bruce Thomson, Pirates linebacker Blair McTague rumbled 30 yards to open the scoring for the visitors. Quarterback Ryan Hunter converted with a pass to Receiver Jamie McLaughlin to make the score 8-0.
Not to be deterred, the Hurricanes struck back quickly through Great Britain running back Mahamadou Niakate. Giving a typical hard-running performance, aided by some exceptional line play ‘Dooma’ ground out tough yards all day and was rewarded with his first touchdown of the 2009 campaign to reduce the deficit to 8-6.
East Kilbride enjoyed a productive second quarter, further extended their lead as Great Britain tight end Mark Murphy snared a pass from Hunter for his second touchdown in as many games. Again, Hunter found McLaughlin to add the two points, to give the visitors a ten point margin.

East Kilbride Pirates 30-12 Dundee Hurricanes (2 of 2)
...With the Hurricanes defense putting up strong resistance to the Pirates running game, they once again opted to advance the ball through the air and it was McLaughlin himself who was able to grab their third score of the day on a 16 yard catch and run. Running Back Blake Kyle ran in the two point conversion, making it 24-6 at the break. The hurricanes knew that a three minute spell had now turned the game away from them.
Some tough talking from canes HC McPherson brought the team out appearing more determined in the 3rd quarter there defence dominated the period, with the Pirates failing to build any momentum on offense. Conversely, the Hurricanes remained productive and were rewarded for their efforts. Despite a goal-line tackle from Pirates defensive back Ivor Clark, from such close range, Niakate was able to force his way over on the next play, adding his second six pointer of the day.
With the score sitting at 24-12 in the fourth quarter and with Dundee finding their running game now stifled, they looked to the skies for inspiration, allowing Pirates defensive backs James McIntosh and Ivor Clarke to record interceptions which shifted the momentum back in favour of the visitors. The final score of the day went to Pirates running back Iain Dick, running in his first points for the club and closing the game off at 30 – 12 to the visitors.
Despite the defeat the canes can take a lot from the game and now look forward to the visit of the Gateshead Senators next sunday ko 2.30.
The hurricanes offensive line colected the offensive mvp as a unit with Jamie Charles and Steven Howe sharing the defensive one for there dominating display.

Hurricanes return to action - Friday, May 08, 2009
After a winter of hard work, the Hurricanes make a welcome return to action on Sunday. The Canes welcome high flying East Kilbride Pirates to Dawson Park in the div 1 encounter.
The Pirates, early title favourites lived up to there billing with a 62-12 victory over the West coast Trojans last week and will come to Dawson determined to continue there winning ways.
The Canes had that game scouted and will hope to start their season with a win. Dundee head Coach Ross McPherson said "I'm not in any way underestimating the challenge ahead but we have a assembled our best side yet and are determined to challenge for national title honours come Sept"
The game kicks of at 2.30 on Sunday at Dawson park .

Can any of you guys spot Scrappy???

Hurricanes season comes to an end - Friday, September 12, 2008
It is with an agonising loss to the West Coast Trojans that Dundee finished their first season in BAFL 1. Despite leading the North division until late in the season a succession of cancelled games and one loss meant they were to finish third overall and miss out on the playoffs. "A very successful year that we can build on for the next year" said Head Coach Ross McPherson.

The Canes are looking forward to finishing the season in style with their 2008 awards night that will take place in Dundee on the 8th of November.

Two Canes will however be training harder than ever as Fraser 'Scrappy' Thomson and Mahamadou 'Dooma' Niakate have been selected for the GB Lions national squad that will face France on the 15th of November in France. We wish them all the best.

Dundee Hurricanes 40 @ 0 Staffordshire Surge - Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Although they have only been promoted to the div this season the Canes have embarked on a 5 game unbeaten run and sit proudly on top at the half way stage. Sunday's game saw the Canes come out running and that coupled with a dominating defence made it a hard day for the Surge.
The first half was totally dominated by the Taysiders and four TDs from Mahamadou Niakate and a long catch from Blaine Robertson saw the Canes hold a commanding 32-0 lead at the break.
The second period saw the Surge show immense spirit and determination to hold the Canes to no score at the end of the third period.
The final period saw the visitors step up a gear and Mahamadou Niakate added a fifth rushing td and a 2 point conversion to seal the game for Dundee.

This was a great performance from the Dundee defence in holding a determined Surge attack to a scoreless day. It was also great to see everyone's progress with some fine performances from rookies on offense and defence. But star of the day was again to be Mahamadou Niakate who now has 1145 yards rushing after 5 games.

Dundee Remains On Top Of Division 1 North - Tuesday, June 03, 2008
Newly promoted Dundee Hurricanes returned victorious from a long journey in England to play the Redditch Arrows and remain at the top of Division 1 with a 22-12 victory.

The game started with both defences forcing their opponents to punt. Dundee however, was not to give up and drove the field on their next possession and Mahamadou (Dooma) Niakate put the first points on the board with a field goal. Dundee's defence was to step it up next when Fraser (Scrappy) Thomson intercepted the ball and returned it for 30 yards. On the following offensive series, it was Scrappy again who beat the safeties to catch a 40 yards TD pass from his older brother Bruce (BLT) Thomson. As half-time was approaching Dundee's defence intercepted a pass on their 5 yards line. HC Ross MacPherson decided to try adding more points and spread his receivers. BLT found Dooma opened down the sideline and with only the safety to beat a well needed touchdown was the result of the 85 yards foot race. With the extra point it was Hurricanes 15-0 Arrows at half time.

The Arrows came back strong in their first drive of the 2nd half as a 15 yards completion gave them their first 6 points. This was however short-lived as on their next possession Hurricanes' new QB Ben Edelshain connected with Blaine (Dish) Robertson to bring the ball inside the Arrows' red-zone. Dooma then ran over a couple of defenders as he was not to be denied his 2nd TD and extra-point of the day, making the score Canes 22-6 Arrows. The Arrows replied with a 64y TD reception from Kieron Mcloed to make the final score 22-12 to the visitors.

Dundee are facing the Staffordshire Surge next.

Dundee Hurricanes 65 South Yorkshire Mustangs 7 (part 1) - Monday, May 19, 2008
The Hurricanes sitting proudly at the top of Division 1 welcomed the Mustangs to Dawson today determined to avenge a heartbreaking 13-12 national semi defeat in 2004.

On the second play of the game Mahamadou Niakate burst through several tackles to open the scoring with a sensational 52 yard touchdown,he then duly added the extra point conversion to give the home side a early 7-0 lead.
Despite some great defence from Dundee they weren't to add to the score in the quarter and went in to the second quarter with a narrow lead. Early in the second period Fraser Thomson ran a Mustangs punt back from 46 yards to open the scoring to 13-0, Niakate again added the extra point conversion.

Dundee were now dominating with their ground game putting the taysiders in great field position but again the defence was to make the breakthrough with Thomson adding to his tally with a 25 yard interception return for a td, Niakate again adding the extra point.
This raised the tempo further and Niakate stormed through the Mustangs from 51 yards for his second score ,as expected he again added the extra point.

Dundee now seemed in total control and Niakate was to cap an outstanding half with a 29 yard td to increase the scoring to 34-0 he then surprisingly missed the extra point. Dundee went into the break with a lead that few would have predicted prior to the game.

Dundee Hurricanes 65 South Yorkshire Mustangs 7 (part 2)
The second half saw the Mustangs come out and attack Dundee seemingly determined to take something from this game this all out attack played into the strong Dundee defence and Danny Guy was to intercept and run back a td from 47 yards,Niakate added the extra point. Another mistake from the visitors saw Ross Kirton recover a fumble from 46 yards for his first score of the season. Dundee now held a sensational 47-0 lead and were attacking the Mustangs from all angles. Back up qb Ben Edelshian was now in the game and found Fraser Thomson with a 22 yard td pass, the score was now 53-0 at the end of the third quarter.

The beggining of the fourth quarter saw Thomson recover a fumble and send a lateral pass into comeback man Calum Buchans hands for a 7 yd touchdown.

The Mustangs then drove down field and were to get a conselation touchdown from close range. Thomson capped a fine day for him when he finished the scoring returning the kick off from 62 yars for his fourth score of the day and a 65-7 victory for Dundee.

Dundee in their first season in Division one sit with a 2-0 record having scored 98 points in the process. They now have three hard away trips starting with the Rams in Leeds on sunday.

Yorkshire Rams 12 @ 33 Dundee Hurricanes - Monday, April 21, 2008
The Hurricanes welcomed the Yorkshire Rams to Dawson Park on Sunday for the ‘Canes inaugural BAFL 1 game. The game started in beautiful sunshine but a chilly wind was making passing hard around the field so the ‘Canes reverted to what they do best and several powerful runs from Mahamadou Niakate and Lars Halford soon put the home side in the Rams half, Bruce Thomson then went to the air and connected with Darren Henderson for the historic first score Mahamadou Niakate added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. The teams then traded drives for the rest of the quarter with none of them finding the end zone.

The second quarter was all going the Rams way until GB star Fraser Thomson intercepted a pass and ran it back for a 52 yard touchdown. That was to be the only score of the half and the ‘Canes went into the half time break with a 13-0 lead.

Yorkshire came out after the break determined to narrow the lead and mid way through the quarter they drove up the field and powered there way into the end zone to narrow the deficit to 13-6,now there was a game to be played but there was no further score to be had in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the Rams determined to get back into the game but the ‘Canes were out to finish the visitors comeback. Mahamadou Niakate was showing his class by now and started to look like he would be the game winner, when he burst through from 24 yards to open the lead back to 19-6, he then added the extra point himself. Dundee now had a hold of the game and another Niakate touchdown this time from 3 yards seemed to make it mission impossible for the visitors. The Rams never gave up and got their second score of the day to narrow the score to 26-12. Niakate wasn't finished however and added a final touchdown and extra point to keep the win in Dundee at 33-12 to the ‘Canes.

Doncaster Mustangs @ Dawson Park on 18th May

Hurricanes Ready To Go!!! - Thursday, April 17, 2008
After the high of their first national final appearance in 2007 the Hurricanes have completed a long hard pre season in preparation for their inaugural BAFL1 campaign. When the Yorkshire Rams visit Dawson Park on Sunday it will be a historic game.
The coaching staff under the leadership of Director of Football Bruce Foster have recruited heavily and reshaped the squad for arguably the ‘Canes hardest season to date. Foster himself is due to leave Dundee soon for a new life in Australia and will hand over the reigns to ‘Canes legend Ross McPherson. The coaching staff was further boosted by the addition of Matteo Bersaconi from Milano Gladiators.
On the playing side there are 16 new signings and notable additions on defense are the likes of Steven Howe from Larencekirk and Jamie Charles from Edinburgh. Special teams coach Stewart Adam said, "I feel this is the strongest ever interior line to play in Dundee and I expect big things from this pair." The return to the game from long time injury of Danny Guy will also complement Fraser Thomson in the defensive backfield. On offense there are further additions who are all capable of contributing to the game but of course all eyes will once again be on French-British superstar, and four times winner of BAFL Player of the Week in 2007, Mahamadou (Dooma) Niakate.

Hurricanes on their way - Monday, March 24, 2008
After reaching the BAFL2 national final in 2007, Dundee Hurricanes return ready to disturb the order in BAFL1. Their hard pre-season training is reaching its end. The last test before their opening game of the season will be hosting the East Kilbride Pirates from the Premier division!
This scrimmage is taking place for the 3rd year running. The Canes will once more test their offence against the stingy Pirates' defense and fine tune their defence against great opposition.
The game will kick off at Dawson Park at 1.30pm on sunday 30th March 2008.
